The recruiting landscape is changing and The Connection Event model CalWest began offering over 17 years ago is ripe for change. In the past, schools looked to annual events, such as the NAIS Annual Conference, to meet potential candidates. Many schools knew of the bulk of their openings around the time of NAIS and could plan accordingly. Now, however, schools find the hiring season stretching out. It starts earlier during the school year as competition increases for top talent, and schools move quickly to follow up on any promising leads. Hiring also continues well into the winter and spring, with some schools not learning of openings until April or later. Although NAIS remains an important venue for meeting candidates in person, the rise of internet platforms such as Skype, FaceTime, etc. make long-distance interviews easier to conduct, speed up the interview process, and discourage some candidates from incurring the time and money to travel to NAIS.
